Nikita Sutar

Educator & Textile Designer

Creative journey

Nikita Sutar is a Mumbai-based textile artist, educator, and designer whose practice bridges traditional craft knowledge with contemporary modes of expression. Trained at Sir J. J. School of Fine Arts and shaped by over two decades of engagement with textile design, surface development, and pedagogy, her work is grounded in material inquiry, hand-led processes, and storytelling through cloth. Textiles, in her practice, function not merely as surfaces, but as living archives that carry memory, labour, and cultural continuity.

Working with techniques such as block printing, tie-and-dye, hand painting, weaving, and natural dyeing, Nikita embraces slowness, repetition, and the subtle irregularities of handmade processes. She frequently collaborates with artisans and craft communities, valuing shared knowledge, embodied skill, and intergenerational exchange. These collaborations inform a practice that is both rooted and evolving—responsive to place, people, and material histories while remaining open to experimentation and contemporary relevance.

Alongside her independent artistic practice, Nikita is a faculty member at ISDI – School of Design & Innovation, where she mentors emerging designers and encourages critical thinking through hands-on making and material exploration. Teaching forms an integral extension of her studio, allowing ideas to circulate between learning, making, and reflection. Her work has been exhibited at State Art Exhibitions, Jahangir Art Gallery, the International Quilt Festival, and the Crafts Museum, Delhi.

Whether teaching, creating, or curating learning experiences, Nikita’s practice is driven by curiosity, cultural sensitivity, and a deep commitment to sustaining craft knowledge through thoughtful, contemporary design—positioning textiles as a site of dialogue between tradition, innovation, and lived experience.
